One that the Bollywood industry still suffers with is the racial stereotypes, like if someone has a dark complexion then they become undesirable, if a person is gay then they become overly flamboyant. And the people who are short in height, the dwarfs, the midgets..they serve as a comic relief. There are various few movies in Indian film history that shows their love story. While a lot of films don’t stay away from going beyond the limit, crossing limits, all to exaggerate and demean such people. There are many Bollywood movies that resorted to racism in the name of entertainment.
So Let’s Take A Look At 5 Offensive And Embarrassing Racism Moments In Bollywood Films
1. Kambakkht Ishq (2009)
The film was a critical and commercial failure. In this terrible comedy movie, there’s a scene where Kareena Kapoor tells the Airport security officials that Akshay Kumar is carrying drugs. So the Airport security officials tell Akshay Kumar that he has been selected for a random private security check. Kumar’s character is a player who sees this as a ploy to get cozy with the female officer. What happens next is an obese African woman takes over the search procedure, she acts over the top dramatic, and doesn’t search Kumar in the normal way. She wrestles with the man, searches him in the intrusive sensitive areas possible in the most rough way. The African security official is portrayed as a barbaric, rough, sadistic woman.
2. Judwaa 2 (2017)
While the film was a commercial success, but it was terrible. Remake of the film of the same name starring Salman Khan. There’s a scene in the film where the main character Raja finds himself in the streets of London getting confronted by the goons. These goons are African people and then we notice that these men have West Indian accents. And these goons accompanying their leader have the names of all the players of West Indian cricket team. Then what happens next is Raja starts singing the ‘Champion’ Theme song and starts dancing with them.
3. Gumnaam (1965)
Hum Kaale Hain Toh Kya Hua Dilwale Hai is one of the best songs of the legend Mohd. Rafi. Just think of this from the perspective of a black child, listen to the lyrics of the song. It has been intrinsically deep rooted in our psyche that dark color in any shape or form is undesirable. The song is undoubtedly beautiful, but the lyrics of the song again reinstates what most of our society thinks. The fact that white, fair skin color is very attractive and is considered beautiful while the dark complexion isn’t that attractive.
4. Fashion (2008)
Madhur Bhandarkar is an expert in making films that highlights the dark face of the glamour, acting world, and other industries. He has directed some amazing films like Page 3, Fashion, Heroine etc. He exposed the fashion industry with the film ‘Fashion’, but he has a tendency to exaggerate and stereotype. Such as the models are depressed, they do drugs, they always make the wrong decisions. There’s a scene where Priyanka Chopra is high on drugs and alcohol, she is dancing with an African man, and the next thing we find out is she sleeps with him. When Priyanka’s character wakes up, she sees her clothes lying on the floor and the African man beside him. She breaks down and realizes that she has hit the rock bottom. The scene shows that fling with the African man is disgusting.
5. Hadh Kar Di Aapne (2000)
One of the most offensive scene filled with racism is in the film Hadh Kar Di Aapne. The film was released in 2000 and it stars Govinda and Rani Mukerji in the lead roles. Basically Rani’s character sets up a trap for Govinda by setting up an African woman to dress up for her husband and then she calls Govinda to the same room. While Rani speaks to Govinda over the phone, the African lady in the background is dancing all the time and is singing ‘BOOM SHAKA LAKA HAYE SHAKA LAKA’. And her husband isn’t an African man, but an Indian man with a ton of dark makeup on his face. Then Govinda mocks the African couple.
