Lieutenant Garima Yadav’s journey is a rather unconventional one. In November 2017, she won a beauty pageant called India’s Miss Charming Face held in Mumbai. After the win, she was selected to go for an international pageant, to be held in Italy. But instead of Italy, Yadav travelled to Chennai’s Officers Training Academy, to realize an old dream – to serve the nation.
Yadav, a resident of Surhaili village in Haryana’s Rewari, studied at the Army Public School Ddagshai (Shimla) and she did her BA from St Stephen’s College, New Delhi. She claims the dream to serve the nation was born out of a desire to make her mother proud. Initially, she wanted to serve the nation by joining the IAS, but she couldn’t clear her IAS mains. Instead, she passed the CDS (Combined Defence Service) in her first attempt and secured AIR – 2. Officers Training Academy in Chennai was the next step.
Speaking about her experience while training, she said, “I had a wonderful experience at the OTA, at first it was difficult for me to cope up with the tough training, the weather was also unfavorable, I did not have very good physical standards but somehow I managed for first few months, I didn’t give up and improved drastically. I actively participated in all curriculum activities.”
“People have a wrong conception that you have to be good at all sports, physically strong to get selected in the SSB, that’s not true, you just should be willing to accept your weaknesses and work on them, should always endeavor to get better and better every day. One should be honest, positive, creative and solution orientated that’s all you need rest everything will follow,” She added.
